Dr. Wayne Stephens
Meet Dr. Wayne Stephens,
Owner, Founder, & Acupuncturist
Dr. Wayne Stephens is the owner, founder, and lead acupuncturist at The Wellness Tree Acupuncture & Wellness Clinic. His life’s work is dedicated to helping individuals in Chattanooga and the surrounding areas achieve optimal health, recover from chronic pain, and restore balance to their bodies and minds. Through the time-tested principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) integrated with modern wellness insights, Dr. Wayne provides compassionate, personalized care that addresses the root causes of health concerns rather than just masking surface symptoms.
Recognizing that every individual brings a unique health history and set of goals, Dr. Wayne tailors each treatment plan to the patient. Whether someone is seeking relief from persistent physical discomfort, managing stress, or seeking holistic preventive care, Dr. Wayne is committed to guiding them on their journey toward long-term vitality.
A Foundation Built on World-Class Education
Dr. Wayne’s passion for holistic healing began in massage therapy, where he first learned the profound impact that hands-on bodywork can have on physical alignment and tension relief. He graduated from the Alpha School of Massage in 1999, which laid a strong tactile and anatomical foundation for his clinical practice. However, his desire to offer comprehensive, long-lasting clinical solutions led him to delve deeply into the expansive system of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
He pursued his clinical training at Five Branches University, one of the nation's premier institutions for Chinese medicine. In 2005, Dr. Wayne completed a rigorous Master’s Degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine, gaining extensive training in acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition, and diagnosis. Recognizing the importance of clinical mastery and advanced specialization, he continued his studies and earned his Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) degree from Five Branches University in 2017.
To deepen his understanding of classical acupuncture and modern integrative hospital practices, Dr. Wayne’s academic journey also led him abroad. As part of his advanced studies, he attended Zhejiang Chinese Medical University in Hangzhou, China—a renowned sister institution of Five Branches. Immersing himself in traditional hospital settings in China allowed him to observe high-volume integrative care, studying alongside veteran doctors who seamlessly combined classical herbal formulations and specialized needle techniques with modern diagnostic methods. This international experience profoundly shaped his clinical perspective and deepened his reverence for the breadth and efficacy of TCM.
Hospital-Based Integrative Medicine Experience
Prior to establishing a full-time practice at The Wellness Tree, Dr. Wayne served as an acupuncturist within the Integrated Medicine Department at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. Working within a major medical center provided invaluable experience collaborating directly with physicians, oncologists, physical therapists, and other medical specialists.
During his tenure at the UT Medical Center, Dr. Wayne treated patients navigating complex health conditions, postsurgical recovery, acute and chronic pain, and the systemic side effects of medical treatments. This clinical background reinforced his belief in the strength of integrative healthcare: combining the best of conventional medicine with evidence-backed natural therapies ensures patients receive the safest, most effective, and most well-rounded care possible.
Clinical Expertise & Philosophical Approach
At The Wellness Tree Acupuncture & Wellness Clinic, Dr. Wayne’s clinical expertise centers on Traditional Chinese Medicine, incorporating acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, and dietary therapy. Traditional Chinese Medicine views the human body as an interconnected system where health reflects a state of dynamic internal harmony. When stress, trauma, poor nutrition, or environmental factors disrupt this balance, pain and disease can take root.
Through precise acupuncture point selection, tailored herbal protocols, and custom lifestyle recommendations, treatment stimulates the body’s natural self-healing mechanisms. Acupuncture increases blood circulation, reduces inflammation, regulates the nervous system, and releases natural pain-relieving endorphins. Dr. Wayne focuses on treating a wide spectrum of health challenges, including:
Chronic and Acute Pain: Back pain, neck tension, joint pain, sciatica, arthritis, and sports injuries.
Stress, Anxiety, and Mood Support: Calming the nervous system to ease emotional stress and improve mental clarity.
Headaches and Migraines: Reducing frequency, intensity, and underlying vascular and muscle tension.
Digestive Health: Easing IBS, bloating, acid reflux, and metabolic imbalances.
General Vitality and Wellness: Supporting immune strength, fatigue recovery, and long-term preventive care.
Life Beyond the Clinic: Balance, Movement, and Tradition
Dr. Wayne strongly believes that a practitioner must embody the principles of balance, cultivation, and vitality that they share with their patients. Outside of his clinical work at The Wellness Tree, his personal interests keep him grounded, active, and deeply connected to nature and movement traditions.
He is an avid practitioner of traditional Chinese Martial Arts (Kung Fu), devoted to disciplines that cultivate mental focus, physical structure, and the movement of internal energy (Qi). His practice includes Wing Chun, known for its efficiency and centerline balance; Xing Yi, which emphasizes explosive linear movement and intentional force; Ba Gua, characterized by fluid, circular footwork; and Tai Chi, the legendary internal art that harmonizes breath, movement, and meditation. The principles of alignment, flow, and mindfulness that Dr. Wayne practices in martial arts directly influence his hands-on acupuncture technique and patient care philosophy.
When he is not in the clinic or training room, Dr. Wayne can often be found outdoors enjoying fly fishing on local streams—a peaceful practice that fosters patience, observational skill, and a deep connection with the natural environment. He also participates in Vintage Base Ball, playing the game according to 19th-century rules and equipment, which offers a fun and spirited nod to history, teamwork, and community athletic tradition.
Partnering in Patient Health
Dr. Wayne views healing as a collaborative process. His objective as a practitioner is not only to provide effective treatments in the clinic, but also to empower patients with the knowledge and lifestyle tools needed to maintain their health outside the clinic doors. Whether someone is dealing with a long-standing health issue that hasn't responded well to standard options or simply wants to feel more vibrant, balanced, and resilient day-to-day, Dr. Wayne provides expert guidance every step of the way.
